As the holiday season approaches, I reflect on my journey over the past few years. Working as a Public Health professional who supports health center staff during the ongoing COVID-19, flu, and RSV challenges has been incredibly demanding. With the added stress of a new administration, prioritizing self-care has been more critical than ever. I want to share my personal story and some tips that have helped me stay healthy and resilient, inspired by Health Outreach Partners’ Organizational Self-Care Assessment Tool and Implementation Guide.

A few years ago, I pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree while working full-time. Balancing work, studies, and personal life was challenging. There were days when I felt overwhelmed and questioned my decision. However, I knew caring for myself was crucial to achieving my goals.

One of the first steps I took was to ensure I was up-to-date with my vaccinations. Getting my COVID-19 and flu shots protected me, my family, and my colleagues. I also made a conscious effort to eat healthily. Incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into my diet while cutting back on sugar and processed foods significantly improved my energy levels and overall well-being.

Exercise became a crucial part of my routine. I found time for short walks or stretching exercises, even on the busiest days. These small moments of physical activity helped reduce my stress and improve my mood, making facing the day’s challenges more manageable.

Maintaining my mental and emotional health was equally important. I started practicing mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, which helped me manage stress and stay focused. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I reached out to colleagues, friends, or mental health professionals. Sharing my experiences and hearing theirs provided relief and new perspectives.

Setting boundaries between work and personal life was essential. I made sure to carve out time for activities I enjoyed and ensured I got adequate rest. This balance helped me recharge and stay motivated.

Despite the challenges, I successfully graduated with my MPH. Shortly after, I was promoted to Senior Program Manager. This role came with new responsibilities and opportunities for growth. Engaging in professional development opportunities, such as workshops and courses, boosted my confidence and motivated me.

Open and honest communication with my team was vital. We discussed challenges and collaborated on solutions, which fostered a supportive work environment. Regularly assessing my workload and making necessary adjustments helped me stay on track. Whenever there were changes or challenges, I communicated them promptly to my supervisors and colleagues, ensuring that expectations were clear.

Fostering a culture of mutual support and respect within our team was crucial. We celebrated successes and encouraged each other during tough times. Utilizing resources like the Organizational Self-Care Assessment Tool helped us evaluate and enhance our workplace’s support for self-care. Developing and implementing action plans to address any gaps in self-care practices led to a healthier and more sustainable work environment.

As I prepare to welcome a new addition to my family, I am more committed than ever to self-care. Taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity, especially for those of us in the healthcare field. By prioritizing self-care, we can better serve our patients and contribute to a positive and productive work environment. Remember, your well-being is the foundation of your ability to care for others.
