Trauma-Informed Motivational Interviewing
A 4-Module Training Series
The series begins by exploring the real-world impact of trauma on individuals with IDD, drawing on personal experiences to illustrate how communication barriers and gaps in understanding within healthcare settings can lead to lasting emotional and psychological harm. From there, participants are introduced to the core principles of motivational interviewing and how to integrate trauma-informed approaches into everyday practice, using real-life examples to build practical skills.
The third module shifts focus to the care team itself, addressing secondary trauma, strategies for building organizational resilience, and the practical application of the Resilient Zone concept to sustain a healthy, supportive team culture.
The series concludes by bringing the focus back to the individual, reinforcing key concepts around trauma and IDD while introducing patient-centered care strategies and what genuine autonomy looks like for people with IDD in practice.
Together, these four modules offer a complete framework — from understanding trauma’s impact, to applying evidence-based interviewing techniques, to sustaining resilient care teams, to centering the dignity and self-determination of every individual served.
